“WHERE LEATHER BECOMES POETRY”

Elite shoemaking and handbag mastery under Glyn Giani – therefore a rigorous apprenticeship for the select few.

ABOUT US

After more than three decades immersed in the art of footwear, I made a deliberate choice to refine my path from general to excellence.

Coming from a background where I was trained by a third-generation shoemaker and refined my craft with qualifications from the leading South African and Italian institutions, I therefore evolved into one of the very few elite craftsmen worldwide capable of taking a raw block of wood, carving a custom last by hand, designing patterns, creating heel moulds, and fully assembling a shoe entirely by hand. I went on to design for Bally of Switzerland and all the leading South African brands.

Later, as the founder and former owner of the Footwear Design and Technology School of SA, I spent years building the country’s pioneering institution—training many of its exceptional designers. It was a chapter of growth, innovation, and sharing knowledge on a broader scale.

Today, that journey has evolved and I have stepped away from large-scale teaching to focus on what I do best: guiding a select few who are truly committed to excellence. At Versed in Leather, the emphasis is on intimate, rigorous apprenticeship in our small Pretoria cobbler shop with maximum two students at a time, undivided attention, and hands-on mastery using only the bare essentials.

Life has taught me balance matters too. Alongside the craft, I share this path with my artist wife—my partner in every sense—who brings grace, beauty, support, and quiet strength to our world. Together, we embrace the rhythm of creation: the quiet intensity of the workshop and the simple beauty of moments beyond it.

If you’re ready to transform leather into something poetic—through hard work, precision, and genuine mentorship—welcome.

This is no longer a school for the many; it’s an atelier for the selected few.
